Sharon
Wood Memorial Mini Soccer Festival
|
|
This
event is held annually in July to raise funds for cancer research
and to support the development of youth football in the community.
It is dedicated to Sharon Wood who gave much of her time helping
the club succeed in where it is today.

Organised
this year by Alan Watson and Peter Thorne,
the tournament is always a great success. Each
year it surpasses the expectations of the previous and 2006
was no exception. 103 teams participated in over 220 matches
on 14 pitches. Over 1000 youngsters/ladies took part trying
to win
one of the 120 trophy's and every square inch of the Wendron
site was utilised. Car parking was provided in surrounding
fields by kind permission of local farmers.

103
teams from all over Devon and Cornwall descended on Wendron
Football
Club for what is now the leading one-day tournament of its kind
in the South West.
This
annual event now in its seventh year; contained more than 220
matches for youngsters aged between 7 and 12 and ladies.
The
day raised more than £6000, this has been divided equally
between the club and cancer research. All winners were presented
with medals and Trophy's by Ivan Winn (President of Wendron),
Bruce Conyon (President of the CCFA), Alan Watson and Peter
Thorne
(tournament
organizers),
Hjalmar Wara (Chairman of Wendron Youth) and by Graham Wood,
Mrs Margaret Tottle and Jenny Hosking (members of Sharon's
family).
The
standard of football was excellent and the support from parents,
coaches and organisers was a credit to those connected with youth
football.
A
special mention of thanks must go to those volunteers who
made the day
possible. In particular the vision and desire of tournament organisers
Alan Watson and Peter Thorne and their team of many volunteers,
too numerous to mention. Thay ensured another successful tournament
passed without any problems.
Lets
also not forget the referees who also gave up their time.
They
had to officiate in 200 between the hours of 9.30am
to 6.0pm when the last final was played.
