Leading
the 1st XI this year is the experienced Barry Johns, supported by
vice-captain Genwood Wearne. In the 2nd XI the emphasis is on youth.
They will be led by new skipper Craig Martin and his vice-captain
Steve Varker. Both teams begin their campaigns with matches against
teams from Truro C. C. on Saturday April 26th.
There will be plenty of mid-week evening cricket to look forward
to this season, with the first team competing in the Vinter Cup
and
both teams entered in the Andrew Cup for the first time in over a
decade. Wendron's top team will be looking to do well in this competition.
There's also the Mining Division Evening League for those players
unable to play on Saturdays or who fancy an extra game during the
week. |
Wendron
Cricket Club needs young people interested in playing cricket! In
2003 the Club is re-launching its Youth
Coaching programme. Youngsters
- both boys and girls - from the age of nine upwards are invited
to attend youth practice sessions where they will be coached in
batting, bowling and fielding skills.
For many years Wendron has had one of the
most successful youth cricket set-ups in Cornwall, fielding successful
sides at Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-16 levels. In the
last few years there has been a dramatic decline in youth development
and last year not a single Wendron youth team took the field.
A newly formed and enthusiastic Youth Committee
is determined to turn things around and are looking for youngsters
in our area to give cricket a try. If you fancy having a go then
contact the secretary, any member of the youth committee or just
turn up at our Underlane ground any Monday evening at 6.30 p.m.
from 12th May onwards.
See you there!
