The Youth Setup

Wendron CC Youth Football is now one of the largest youth set-ups in Cornwall, consequently it is a major organisational challenge to the many volunteers involved.

Wendron CC Youth Football has continued to build on the success of previous seasons such that the long-term future of the club is in good hands.

The opportunity for youngsters to progress through all youth levels from U/8 up to senior football is available to anyone interested in joining the club, including ladies.

A team of dedicated managers and qualified coaches ensures the long- term stability of Wendron CC Youth Football.

Additional land has been purchased for a mini-soccer area and a third full size pitch. This has expanded the already excellent facilities available to all member players and supporters.

Minimum age entry of new members is six years old by the 1st September 2002 but new players of all age groups are welcome. To ensure adequate supervision and control it is essential that boys/girls attend only the age group sessions allotted to their date of birth.

There is always an urgent need for parents either to support the main committee or form a separate "Fundraising Committee".

Volunteers are required to assist with coaching, control, refreshments, shirt washing, match referees, pitch preparation and particularly transport when away matches are arranged.

Any parents or volunteers with the enthusiasm to help out in anyway are requested to contact the Chairman,
Hjalmar Wara by e-mail or 01326 564024.

A History of Wendron Cricket / Football Club
Wendron CC was formed as Porkellis Cricket Club in 1949. It enjoyed a number of successful years in the early 50's playing on a number of different farmers' fields in the Porkellis & Carnkie districts. After the 1976 season the Club was in danger of folding when it lost the use of a field at Bellevue. Determined efforts by members ensured that this did not happen. Three fields were located at Underlane and funds were raised, hedges removed and a wicket prepared, so that by the start of the following season the ground had been purchased and made ready for cricket.
A pavilion / clubhouse with changing rooms, showers, kitchen, bar and function room built entirely by voluntary labour was opened in 1982. This provided top-class facilities for players and supporters alike. In 1991 the building was extended to include a steward's flat, a small dining area and a match officials' changing room.

In 1993 the Club became the Cornwall Indoor Six-A-Side champions. The Club also ran two mid-week Evening League teams and many young players went on to represent County and regional age groups.

In 1986 a football Section was formed to play occasional friendly fixtures but has since grown into a most vibrant part of the Club. The 2nd & 3rd teams play regularly in the Falmouth / Helston League, the Ist X1 becoming Division 2 Champions in 1990. Matches were played on a hired field approximately half a mile from the Clubhouse. It was vital for the Club's future to develop a football pitch on our main site to give the football section greater security and enable it to progress to senior status, presently there are now two pitches at club level.

The Club was fortunate in attracting substantial grant aid from both local and national sources in order to provide the community with a floodlit all-weather sport area, this was completed in 1992. As a result of this project local people were provided with a first class tennis facility and the ladies were able to launch netball in 1993. By far the greatest boost has been given to the youngsters of the district who use the area for soccer training. Each week over 200 attend regular practice sessions supervised by enthusiastic coaches. The Club's commitment to youth gained national recognition in the same year when the Football Association made it a Mini Soccer Centre. Mr Ted Powell the England U-18 manager attended one of the training sessions.

Wendron CC Football Club is located in one of West Cornwall's largest and most rural parishes. It is in an area deprived of facilities and services and is the only sports club serving a host of village communities. The hard working committee is proud of its achievements and is keen to improve facilities in order to provide the best for the youth (and not so young) of the area.
